What is the default compression level for local synchronisation?

Charles-2
Searching the 'net showed that rsync asks zlib to use default
compression which is equivalent to --compress-level=6
(http://samba.2283325.n4.nabble.com/what-is-the-default-value-for-compress-level-tp2538905.html)
but that would not be a good choice for local synchronisation.

Should we use --compress-level=0 for local synchronisation?  We are
using rsync 3.0.9 and 3.1.1.

You should not use compression at all on local copies.  It is nothing
but wasted CPU cycles.

Thanks Kevin :-)

You answered the question perfectly but it is not the question I want
answering!

The question I want answering is "Does rsync need telling not to
compress when SOURCE and DEST are both local or does it automatically
choose a sane compression setting?"

If you don't ask rsync to compress, it won't compress...
That's different from telling rsync not to compress.
